Who Can Obtain a Residence Permit in Turkey?

Anyone who wants to stay in Turkey for more than 3 months needs a residence permit. And, you need to apply for it. Otherwise, your presence in Turkey is illegal.

Who Can Apply Residence Permit in Turkey?

The following are required to apply for a residence permit in Turkey;

  • You have a “registration certificate” for an international protection application
  • You are exempt from residence permit pursuant to bilateral or multilateral agreements to which the Republic of Turkey is a party
  • If you are a diplomatic or consular officer working in Turkey
  • You work in the representative offices of international organizations in Turkey
  • If your identity card has one of the labels “international protection applicant”, “international protection status”, “statelessness”
  • You have a valid work permit

Short-term Residence permit in Turkey

Residence permit for Family

A family residence permit can be issued to the foreign spouse, minor children and dependent foreign child of a Turkish citizen. In order to obtain a permit, the sponsor must have sufficient income to support the residence permit applicants.

Residence Permit for Student 

If you are in Turkey to enroll in primary or secondary education, you can obtain a student residence permit. You will not need this if you already have a family residence permit. You can also apply for this residence permit if you are planning to study at a higher education institution in Turkey at the associate, bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate, specialty training in medicine (TUS) and specialty training in dentistry (DUS) levels.

Long-term Residence Permit

If you have resided in Turkey for at least eight years without interruption under a residence permit issued by the Turkish authorities, you can apply for a long-term Turkey permit with indefinite validity.

Note that you cannot apply if you have resided in Turkey as a refugee, conditional refugee and subsidiary protection status holder, humanitarian residence permit holder and temporary protection status holder during the specified period.

Humanitarian residence permit in Turkey

You can apply for this residence permit if you are in Turkey without a valid visa or residence permit, but have not been deported, are awaiting deportation or cannot return to your country of residence for urgent reasons.

If you are a victim of human trafficking and you are in Turkey, you can apply for this residence permit.

How to Apply Residence Permit in Turkey

To apply for a residence permit in Turkey, you should follow a number of steps. The first thing you should know, you have to apply for a residence permit within 1-2 months after coming to Turkey.

Decide which type of residence permit you would like to apply for and then complete the online application on the Turkish Ministry of Interior’s website at https://e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr/. You will need to provide your first and last name, date of birth, your parents’ names, nationality and contact details.

You should then go to the “Central Appointment System” website and make an appointment at the office of the Directorate General of Migration Management nearest to you. In fact, you will need to fill out a form with your information and your address in Turkey.

You will then be provided with the address of the nearest DGMM office and a list of the required documents, available dates and times for the appointment, as well as the application and card fee you will need to pay.

Validity of Residence Permit in Turkey

The validity of a Residence Permit in Turkey varies according to the type of permit you have as follows:

  • Short-term residence permits may be issued for a maximum of two years at a time.
  • Long-term residence permits are issued with indefinite validity.
  • The validity of a Student Residence Permit depends on the duration of your studies.
  • If your study period is less than one year, the duration of the residence permit cannot exceed the duration of the study period.
  • A family residence permit may be issued for a period not exceeding three years at a time.
  • A humanitarian residence permit is issued and extended for a maximum period of one year.
  • Authorities issue a residence permit for victims of human trafficking for a period of thirty days.

Residence permit for foreigners married to Turkish citizens

Residence permit for foreigners married to Turkish citizens; Foreigners married to Turkish citizens may apply for a short-term residence permit in case of divorce, provided that they have lived with a family residence permit for at least three years. However, if a court decision determines that the foreign spouse is a victim of domestic violence, the three-year period does not require.
